Applying for or renewing your passport seems to always take longer than it should. Do yourself a quick favor and check the expiration date on your passport. If it expires any time in 2017, you should renew it this month. November is the best time to renew since the U.S. Department of State receives the fewest number of applications, and it’s by far the lowest. It typically takes 4-5 weeks to renew, but can be much, much longer during the peak months. The last thing you want to worry about when preparing for your big trip overseas is obtaining a current passport. Not only does it add stress, it’s an added expense to get it expedited or scheduling an appointment at a passport agency. Renewing or applying for a new passport in November nearly guarantees that you’ll receive it within 5 weeks.
Keep in mind that even though you may have a current passport during your scheduled trip dates, some countries require up to an additional 6 months of validity to allow you to enter their country. So, if you’re traveling internationally in 2017 and don’t have a passport or yours expires in 2017, submit your application or renewal this month!
The worst month to apply or renew? March. Planning well ahead will save you a big headache, especially for when that awesome deal comes around and you need to book quickly.
